WHAT IS A SLUGGO?

A "Sluggo" is not a kick boxer.  Unfortunately, it isn't even a term of endearment.  It is a derogatory label applied to many managers by Internet photographers.  The sad thing is that the term is well earned by all too many!

A "Sluggo" is a photographer, boyfriend, parent or just about anyone who has decided to call himself a manager and look after the interests of a model or actor.  The problem is that, in nearly all cases, this turns out to be nothing more than the blind leading the blind.  Sluggos are, most often, unqualified, over-protective and do more harm than good for the model.

Legitimate photographers and casting directors are reluctant to deal with sluggos.  They make unrealistic demands, are often unreliable and involve themselves in aspects of the transaction that they shouldn't.  All too often, the only reason one becomes a manager is to have a pretty girl on his arm!

Legitimate, professional managers serve an important place in the industry.  If you do your research you will find that many of the more powerful mangers in the business, began as agents and dropped their licenses to become managers.  The reason is that, in California, a manager is allowed to participate in production whereas an agent cannot.  An agent can have only limited ownership of a film where a manager can be a full participant.  Indeed, most major films are packaged by managers.  In many cases, the "Associate Producers" you see in the credits are the managers for the stars.

The point is that if you need a manager, a good respected one will help you.  An amateur will do nothing but hurt.  If you are seriously thinking about having your boyfriend or photographer manage you, ask them first what qualifies them to make better decisions than you?  Ask them what credentials they have to make you successful and more importantly ask them why you are better off with them than without them.  A good manager will be seen by you but will work from the wings so as not to be a distraction.

There has been a lot written about sluggos on the net.  If you insist that you must have your boyfriend manage you, our best advice is to have him do it from a distance.  Make all contacts yourself.  Answer all e-mails yourself and leave him at home when you go on a shoot.
